Take Running and Add Something, to begin

this is that line about at in the beginning thing…

My life as a runner began pretty simply……..it was because of a girl….

well maybe……

I’d tried running before, but one specific morning in Kamloops…

showed up one summer morning for a workout at what then was my gym, the McArthur Fitness Centre…….and the building was closed…someone had pulled the fire alarm, we weren’t even allowed to lock our bikes up at the bike racks beside the building…so sitting and waiting….

one of those waiting, just said at one point, she wasn’t going to just wait, she dropped her gym bag and went for a run….on the track that went around the Park…seemed like a good idea, my effort though, lasted about a minute….but thought, maybe I should run….

a few months later, I started..or at least gave it a try……I went back to the scene of the crime…but, a lot earlier in the morning…it was winter, it was dark – I didn’t want people to see me…..and it was horrible…there were no lights on the trail/track…it was Kamloops, so a place where snow and ice would melt during the day, and turn to ice over night…so I tried to run, I had no endurance, none, I ran a bit, walked more, and kept slipping and fallling on the ice…..it wasn’t a moment to want to do ever again..

So, I then tried from our home in our Westsyde neighbourhood….not much better…I was running in deep wet snow, getting splashed by cars and buses, and I could not go for more than half a block at a time…..this just wasn’t happening…

the thing is, I thought I was fit…….I biked a lot. nothing very far, but pretty much daily.

I did weights…..again, consistant, but I was never going to be huge, no matter how much protein powder I chowed down…

A few month later, maybe 6….we made the move to St. Albert…..a gorgeous place, lots of green, lots of paved trails..a bit of a river valley…so the dream was yet again to start running….

The Running Room had yet to make the move, all we had really was a place downtown called Unique Fitness, and they had a Sunday morning power walking group, and a very small (2 people) run group…I tried the run group, I could not keep up….and those in that group suggested maybe I should start with the walking group…so the following Saturday, I did……..where I ended up walking/running……again, wasn’t going to happen…

Then I noted an add for a run clinic, a Saturday morning Run clinic at a Running Room in West Edmonton/Callingwood……..1996, I want to say the summer of ’96….and that was it…

I remember thinking, 10 weeks, 10 Saturdays, that would be it….

It wasn’t………man, it just clicked…..went from trying to run in cross trainers to actually running shoes….I don’t know if I actually learned anything during those 10 weeks, that finished up with a 5K Run for the Cure really fun run……but once that was done, I just kept coming..

The Callingwood Running Room was unique….the Run Club was awesome, something I keep trying to re-create at my running room…Run Club was pretty much everyday of the week….every weekday evening at 6 o’clock…every Saturday morning at 9:30(where I got hooked) ..and of course Sundays at 8:30……

and we seemed to run every chance we got…if there was a stat. holday we’d run…almost any excuse…and huge…then we started doing races, events, Death Races, Triathlons, destination Marathons….then there were picinics, parties, dinners, we ate a lot, and drank an awful lot of coffee…..

and since, we’ll I’ve worked at and managed a Running Room, Fooztie’s Running Room in St. Albert…….25 years later

so all the while..I learned a lot of lessons, made every mistake you could think of, ran or took part in every type of event you could think of, and the one lesson that has always stuck…….it’s gotta be fun, it’s gotta be social…..

So that’s be this blog…lessons learned, shared…….all about how I found my way
