A Day in the life of a Race Director

No pictures today yet…waiting for our handy dandy camera man….but A LONG DAY.

Yes nerves meant no sleep, and out of bad at 6PM

On the route at 7AM setting up the route with direction signs…..with NO COFFEE

only had 7 spots to look after where runners/walkers might go astray and get lost.

simple enough…a few dog walkers wondering what I was up to……and a good 5K walk to warm me up.

then wait for the crew of volunteers….and they arrived….send them out to their spots…the hydration crew to their location with their H2O table jug and cup…had four of them….

the food station making hot chocolate, we were short so they went out for more, we had two urns go, 120 bottles of water, 120 bananas ( we had way too many)….granola bars ……and later my wife and daughter and went out and grabbed 80 cups off coffee for all…

The Running Room crew was there on site to set up the gantry…….the timing clocks and the good old sound system……to blast out some great tunes….I picked out I’ll Be There For You….in memory of the late great Chandler Bing….

our warm up act showed up in shorts ready to go, it was a little chilly, but that went amazing…..and then, well, the run was supposed to begin at 10, we started a little early..to get those runners, the now warmed up runners going…the 5K, the 10…and then the oh so funny kids…..we had charcters…it’s two days to Halloween right?……we had a minnon, a Friday the 13th charcter, and a couple of others to sweep, and to lead and sweep the kids……..that all went well…

and it was over way too quickly…..succesfully, but after three months, it was done in a couple of hours…..

sounds like all enjoyed the location and the route…there are a few things I could do better…..have done better….I want timing chips and medals….maybe not t-shirts, but maybe…….maybe be more patient, not freak out, take it easy, relax..it’ll all be fine….

but, I planned and planned, I reached out to many people, shared the race everywhere I could….sought out sponsor, begged for volunteers (while others are begging for volunteers, I had actually more then I needed, but I made use of everyone of them………I feel thankful)

I now know, this will go next year….but, after the balance sheets are done, donations all shared, I’m taking a couple of months off, then, well, race director 2.0
